Food & Beverage Managers Association of Houston

About The Association

The association was formed in 1991 in an attempt to give food and beverage managers of all the major hotels and clubs in Houston an opportunity to network on a monthly basis, learn more about one another’s operations, and create opportunities for continuing their education in the field of food and beverage.

It has also been an opportunity to create a not for profit organization that has raised money for needy charities related to our industry
.

How the Association Works

We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. for a short reception followed by the meeting at 7:00 p.m. In the event that we have a guest speaker, the speaker will usually give his or her presentation at this time for no more than 30 or 40 minutes, leaving some time for questions. We then have a roundtable discussion and we normally wind up around 8:30 p.m. The expectation is for the hotel hosting the meeting to provide a private meeting room for about 20 people, with a boardroom style set up, and to lay out some simple chips and dip, or hors d’oevures with wine, beer and sodas.

In October, we hold our annual fundraising event, which is held at the hotel of any member who is kind enough to host it.

Responsibilities of the Association

Assuming that food and beverage responsibilities fall under your jurisdiction, you may become a voting member with payment of annual dues of $175.00. Associate members, (presently limited to 25% of the membership), have the right to vote but can not hold office and their annual dues are $300.00.

While it is understood that the demands placed on food and beverage directors in hotels and clubs these days are great, it is hoped that all members will participate in at least 9 meetings out of the 12 that are held during the year.

Benefits of the Association

Aside from the educational benefits of our guest speakers, the association provides a unique opportunity for food and beverage directors to network and share information about key issues relating to the food and beverage industry in Houston.

It also provides a useful source for finding qualified people for our hotels. Resumes can be easily circulated and anyone looking for staff can share their requirements at the monthly meeting in the hope that a suitable resume has been received by a fellow F&B Director who, at the time, does not have a position available.

During the course of the year, the association enjoys two or three social gatherings where members and spouses get together for formal or casual events.

Achievements of the Association
The association has set up an endowment at the University of Houston that currently has over one hundred and ten thousand dollars contributed by the association. The endowment awards annual scholarships to Hotel Restaurant Management students. We also have a culinary endowment with over twenty thousand dollars of current value. The association is healthy and strong thanks to the support and dedication of the many members who attend our meetings and take a proactive role in contributing to the success of the organization.
